The one-stop support service for music development for the visually impaired

The one-stop support service for music development for the visually impaired is launched in 2021, funded by the Arts Development Fund for Persons with Disabilities of the Social Welfare Department. Many visually impaired (VI) people are highly skilful, talented and enthusiastic in music. Unfortunately, it is challenging and difficult for them to learn music due to the lack of support. There are not enough music teachers who are familiar with Braille sheet music and know how to teach visually impaired students. Also, performance opportunities and professional training for the VI to take internationally recognized music examinations are insufficient. Furthermore, Braille sheet music transcription service and the music scores collection are far more behind the demand of VI musicians.

Therefore, the aim of this project is to assist the VI to receive professional music training so that they are able to demonstrate their talents. Our goals are to:

  1. Establish a professional music consultant team to provide professional training and music consultation for 12 VI participants, in the form of mentorship program
  2. Promote the use of Braille scores, by building up a music scores database, and providing training services
  3. Promote social inclusion, by demonstrating the talents of the VI musicians

Our project focuses on supporting the participants to have vocal, piano and music theory lessons. Participants will receive professional music training, mentor consultation services, performance and exchange opportunities. Also, we will cooperate with other departments of the Hong Kong Blind Union to promote the use of Braille music.
